Shooting a Wedding with the GoPro

by

One great feature of the GoPro is the ability to set the hi-def video camera to shoot still photos at various increments utilizing the awesome wide angle format of the camera. There are innumerable amazing applications for this feature. But shooting weddings? No, I wouldn’t be silly enough to carry only a GoPro around with me when asked to shoot a wedding. While it would certainly be an experiment worth trying and the end result would be nothing if not a surprise. However, the number of “throw-away” images and the lack of control would make the GoPro an impractical device for capturing the important moments of the day. Although, wearing one of the helmet mounts on your head for a wedding would certainly elicit some photo worthy looks.

I shot a wedding for one of my best friends Erickson (yes, I know, “best” seems to be definitive and absolute and there should only be one, but my wife’s philosophy that we have different best friends at different times in our life is wearing off apparently. But I diverge. Maybe that’s another topic for another blog post) and one of my new favorite people, his bride Margie (there, back on track). The wedding took place in the beautiful beach community of Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Right before the ceremony I threw my GoPro on a table in the back of the chapel and set it to take a picture every 2 seconds. While the little video camera won’t do as a primary camera, it did capture some great wide angle images. It will now be a staple of my kit. Here are a couple of the shots it captured:

A nice wide angle of the chapel.
The walk down the aisle after the ceremony as the bride and groom receive celebrity-like paparazzi treatment.
The all elusive fist-bump between photographers. When is the last time this was captured? Maybe never.
Dancing the afternoon away in the reception area.

In my opinion, the GoPro makes a great little addition to a wedding photo kit. Try it out. Some of the images you’ll capture are hard to do with any other device. Next test for a GoPro…a photo booth?
